Certified Green Business | Lafayette, CA
Since 2003, The Rising Loafer Café and Bakery has made sustainability the backbone of its operations, not a layer on top. This Lafayette neighborhood staple earned its Certified Green Business status by changing how a café thinks about waste, materials, energy, and community, one decision at a time. The result is an 80% reduction in waste and a business that actively teaches others how to follow the same path.
The Sustainability Print:
Hyper-Local Sourcing:
Breakfast and lunch menus are built around locally grown, additive-free ingredients, cutting food miles and supporting the regional economy. The café also maintains a back-business garden on-site.
Carbon Footprint on the Menu:
Through Tinġo’s partnership, each menu item now displays its carbon footprint, giving guests clear information to make conscious choices.
Resource Recovery:
Animal fats, plastics, cardboard, cans, and glass are all recycled separately, ensuring nearly every byproduct from the kitchen is diverted from landfill.
The Zero-Waste Artisan Kitchen
The Rising Loafer approaches sustainability from the ground up, including the ground itself.
Refurbished Infrastructure:
The café’s tables are built from old doors. The interior uses reused and refurbished materials throughout, treating furniture with the same circular logic applied to ingredients.
The Styrofoam Ban:
Long before local mandates, the café eliminated all polystyrene products. Dine-in guests eat on real plates with real silverware. All takeout uses reusable containers.
Toxic-Free Cleaning:
The kitchen cleans sinks, grill, and hood exclusively with white vinegar and baking soda, eliminating chemical cleaners entirely.
Energy and Water Conservation:
Low-flow faucets and toilets, energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, and equipment timers prevent waste at every level of the operation.
Social Sustainability:
The owners are recognized community leaders who partner with Job Corps of America and Berkeley Youth Alternative to offer internships, train young adults in environmentally responsible restaurant operations, and share their green expertise with other local businesses.
The Rising Loafer is the most comprehensively “circular” business in this portfolio. The same sustainability standards applied to ingredients are applied to furniture, appliances, cleaning supplies, and community relationships. It’s a neighborhood café that runs like a sustainability textbook, and it has been doing so quietly for over two decades. The Tinġo partnership adds carbon-footprint labeling to make that commitment visible at the most personal level: the menu.
